The universe must get its joy from somewhere. I mean, it is large and all-encompassing, so there's not a lot of entertainment to be had.

...or maybe it's just pissed off at us for destroying one of its planets. Either way, the universe has definitely honed its irony skills.

I think the universe is simply feeling particularly sadistic right now. There's a woman my mother knows who was laid off from her job when it merged with another company, and who has been unable to find work for 5 months. Her dog developed epilepsy about 3 months ago, and is now on extremely expensive medication. Last week, the water main in her house broke and flooded her basement, resulting in a huge amount of damage, and the loss of several antiques/items of great sentimental value to her.

So, yeah. The universe is just, uh, universally pissed off.

Meh. Unfortunately, we're in it for the long haul. And the universe surprises you with neat stuff sometimes.
