...what exactly is a salmonbot?

Salmonbot is an AIMbot that uses LJ's recently updated page and randomly connects two people who have updated their journals. The other sn always shows up as some variation of ____salmon. I've seen AngrySalmon, HarshSalmon (as appears here), DevourableSalmon, whatever. Add the adjective of your choice, it probably exists. It always starts off with a random opening line (usually something odd, although I've seen just 'hi'), and only one person gets that, then if you respond, it gets sent to the other, random person. Obviously, then, both parties (unless they have had a salmonbot in the past) are highly confused and usually fairly angry, what with the paranoia that runs rampant about the 'net these days.

Of course, if you ARE in on the joke, the salmonbot can be quite fun. Especially if it's one that is interactive. You'll get some weeeeeird comments from some of the bots, oh yes.
